Sept’16 Paint 30 Days, Day 9

Today roared by. When I did sit down, I spent all my time deciding on my subject. Then I spent what time I had left considering how to paint it. Unfortunately, most of my people photos, old and new, suffer from the glare of a flash. I have to get past that by making a plan, and decide for myself where the highlights should be. I did a little fishing around on Google to remind myself about possibilities in portrait lighting. Then, in my mind’s eye, I try to apply the five values after those sketches I’ve been practicing. Eventually I hope not to be distracted by nasty glare in a working photo.

If that’s not enough to deal with, for my next few paintings I will also practice drawing with the paint. I used to do that in class–there was no time to use a pencil and be fussy or detailed when getting a portrait started. (When I get out of practice I revert to the pencil.) I know I can get a likeness, I just have go at it without doubt.
